I'm HOPING this is the right place to put this... if not, that's egg on my face.
Hey mods! I’ve got a question about something that an exploratory mer might be able to find in potential underwater ruins during the temp event, and that could also lead in to a player plot down the line!
Namely, I’d like for Black Hat to stumble across an Antikythera-like mechanism in the ocean - it’s not in perfect condition, it’ll take a lot of time to decipher the scripts on the discs around it and figure out just what it is and how it works, but after (months) of work repairing and researching it’d end up turning out to be a loom!
One that weaves a cloth out of the ambient powers of the various gods and paranormal entities in Ryslig. It’s not really creating a powerful artifact so much as turning the power into threads representing what’s currently going on in Ryslig - a lot of grey and coppery for the Fog and Fourth, another color for Mana, and various assorted thin threads representative of other powers with little influence (like the various gods of past events). Since the Fog, Fourth, and Mana are the most dominant powers the cloth would reflect them the most, and the rest would be more like, flavor to give wiggle room for future events or nod to past ones. Something of a map of the current magic levels, really.
As for how it would tie into a player plot, I would want to hash out the details more before submitting it officially, but the basic gist would be that, once Black Hat finally manages to get this loom working again, he decides to use it in a way that it’s not meant to be (as it’s a passive object, simply recording the state of the world.) He’d use it to weave himself into the ambient power of the world in a bid to overtake the Fog god. Horror ensues.
I definitely need to workshop the player plot idea more before submitting it! I know the year’s already filled up with stuff as is, so having this ‘leyline loom’ be a long restoration project would delay the player plot itself, and if the plot doesn’t end up being used, I can just say Black Hat’s eventual attempt to make the loom do what it’s not supposed to failed entirely! It's just making him a nice long tapestry of mostly the same three colors.
