To make this page easier to navigate, the sections of this page are collapsed. All the rules have additional context and information to clarify how they should be taken. To see this, click on the rule and it will expand.
The Disciplinary Process section is also collapsed, and you can expand it by clicking on the title to see the details of how the rules are enforced.
While this game is intended to be very open-ended, conflicts and compromises are inevitable. Respect other players’ boundaries, and remember that we’re all just here to have fun. Harassment and bullying of other players, or of the mod team, will not be tolerated.
This applies to all game-related discussions and communities, including those on Plurk, Discord, and other platforms.
2. Read the rules and OOC info
Make sure to read all the game's information and any mod announcements or posts in the
rysligooc community. Ignorance is not an excuse for breaking a rule, missing important details (such as the AC's end date) or skipping the Activity Check altogether and idling out.
However, given the mysterious and fluctuating nature of Ryslig's setting and the general unreliability of nearly all of the information available, don't worry too much about the IC lore or setting information. Other monsters might correct you...but you only have their word for it.
3. All players must be 16+
This is for the comfort and safety of everyone, so please do not apply if you are under 16.
4. Be active
Current minimum activity is 10 comments per month. For more information about activity guidelines, please see the MAIN AC POST.
If you are unable to make AC, please inform the mods as soon as possible about your need for a hiatus or strike. Failure to respond to AC will result in idling out of the game, which (besides being awkward for the mods!) will mean you cannot re-apply for two app cycles. To avoid this, please use the DROP POST if you plan to leave the game.
5. OOC =/= IC
Please do not allow any Out-of-Character issues you have with other players to bleed into In-Character situations in-game, or vice versa. Remember that characters’ views will not always reflect those of their players, and the games’ themes will not always reflect the mods’ beliefs. This is especially important since Ryslig deals with heavy themes, and negative CR is common!
6. Don't infomod or godmod
Infomodding is providing your character with information which they do not have IC reason to know, or having them act on OOC information such as game mechanics or plot plans. Infomodding also includes having your character know personal or private information about another character without player permission.
Godmoding is forcing other players’ characters to act in a certain way, or deciding what someone else’s character does.
Both are against the rules.
In the interest of preventing godmoding, if your character’s actions are likely to have a significant impact on other characters or other players’ plans, it is important to speak to all involved players first. This includes actions which will affect the setting, such as major property damage - please take these to the OOC comm to give other players a heads-up in advance of playing them!
7. Don't playercest
Playercest is the act of one player threading with themselves, with or without another player involved. Such threads are not considered appropriate for AC, and often read as self-aggrandising and exclusive. We encourage players who play multiple characters to keep them as separate as possible, and not to use one of their characters as a tool for another of their own character’s storylines.
8. Be aware of boundaries and content warnings
While Ryslig is a monster-themed game and gratuitous violence is to be expected, always be considerate of others.
We expect warnings and cuts to be placed on any posts/threads containing common triggers, as well as any triggers or squicks which other players have requested to be warned for. A master list of content which should be warned for can be found here.
Explicit sexual content should only be played in the dedicated NSFW comm, not on the main RSDOS or Ryslig comms. Please see the smut guidelines below for how to properly thread any 18+ log/thread.
Players in Ryslig have the absolute right to opt out of interacting with any topic, player or character, with or without a reason given. Forcing interaction with someone who has already directly asked you not to will be viewed as harassment and is cause for a conduct strike.
9. Communicate with other players
Nobody here is a mind-reader! It is important to be upfront, honest, and direct. This applies to any plot plans you have which involve other players, as well as criticism, concerns, and other OOC issues.
We have a monthly How’s My Driving meme over on the OOC comm, and we encourage all players to make use of it! Many players also have HMD posts on their character journals, and all players are required to provide at least one means of communicating with them OOCly.
If you have a concern about another player’s behaviour, you should raise it with that player directly in the first instance, before speaking to the mods. Please do not bring personal conflicts to the mods unless a) the instigating behaviour is directly and clearly against the rules and/or b) you have already sought a resolution with the other player to the best of your ability and been unable to resolve the issue.
It is never appropriate to attack another player for their behaviour to a broad audience, especially if attempts to resolve the issue with the player or through the mods have not been made. This includes game-related activity on Plurk, Discord, and anoncomms. Activity which is directly tied to Ryslig will be viewed as being covered by Ryslig rules, regardless of the platform.
10. Bringing concerns to the mods
If you are unsure about the application of these rules, have concerns about a player or the game itself, or if you have a question which is not answered by the FAQs, Setting FAQs, Bestiary, or Activity Check pages, the mods can be contacted through the MOD CONTACT page or by PM to the
rysligmods account.
Please do not bring mod queries to individual mods, or ask them on Plurk. Contact the mods through mod accounts only. This prevents confusion between answers given on behalf of the mod team, and those given by a single mod. Asking through the proper channels also makes it easier for the team to keep track of what has been asked, so you are more likely to get a response!
If, for whatever reason, you want your message to be private from someone on the mod team (for example, if you have a concern about a specific mod’s behaviour), mention this in your message or comment and we will aim to maintain your privacy. However, be aware that all mods and helpers get notifications from the Mod Contact post and will be able to see your comment.
We will never penalise someone for bringing their concerns to us in good faith.
11. The mods have the final say
Not every situation will be clearly addressed by the rules or past events. While we’d like the rules to be as comprehensive as possible, there’s always the possibility that we’ll run into a situation where action may be necessary without any of the rules being explicitly broken. In these situations, we will aim to be transparent about our decision-making and reasoning, but we maintain the right to take whatever action the mod team considers necessary for the safety and comfort of the game as a whole.
If a concern is raised with the mods, we will discuss it with any affected players (confidentiality will be taken seriously in this process, and the person reporting will only be named if they are comfortable with it). You may be asked for your side of the story, and for evidence to support it. We will only take disciplinary action once evidence has been provided of the person's involvement in rule-breaking behaviour, beyond reasonable doubt.
The mod team (and helpers where appropriate) will then discuss the concern in mod chat, and determine which, if any, rules have been broken and what action should be taken. You will only hear about a mod decision after a serious conversation has taken place behind the scenes, and after we have agreed on the best way to proceed. Please be aware of this, and respect the outcome! We do not make disciplinary decisions hastily or without thinking, and we may have information which other players are not privy to.
If the mod team agree that a player has broken one or more of the above rules, there are three main types of disciplinary action which we may take:
Warning
If your infraction is reasonably minor, and not part of an ongoing pattern of behaviour, you may be given a formal warning. The mods will inform you of why you are being warned. There is no set limit on how many warnings you can be given; however, any future behaviour similar to the behaviour leading to the warning will be escalated to a conduct strike. If you show a pattern of behaviour which earns you warnings, we may also escalate to a strike.
Conduct strike
A conduct strike (not to be confused with an AC strike, which is not a disciplinary matter!) will be given for behaviour which is considered serious, but does not warrant a ban. Ryslig operates on a three strikes and you’re out system - if you accrue three conduct strikes for any reason, you will be automatically banned.
As of 2023, we are testing a policy of reviewing conduct strikes after three years. If we believe that you have changed your behaviour and shown a commitment to avoiding past mistakes, we may downgrade the strike to a warning. This is to allow for players to grow past their mistakes.
We will inform you if and when your conduct strike has been reduced to a warning
Ban
In cases of behaviour which is dangerous, harmful, illegal, or shows an escalating pattern, or in cases where a player has three conduct strikes, we retain the right to ban players from the game entirely. Banned players will be removed from all communities and game spaces, and will not be permitted to re-apply.
We also retain the right to pre-ban players who have demonstrated serious/dangerous patterns of behaviour in other games and RP spaces. We do not ban anyone lightly, but our priority is to foster a safe, comfortable environment for our players, and if someone has repeatedly shown that they will make that impossible, we will take action.
1. All explicit sexual content is ONLY to be posted on the dedicated community, and should be under a cut.
If you want to thread out explicit sexual content, you will first need to join our dedicated 18+ community,
monsterotica. This community is locked to prevent it being seen by minors. However, you do not have to be part of the game in order to join, and you will not be automatically removed if you leave Ryslig.
All posts in
monsterotica should be placed under a cut. This prevents pornographic and NSFW content from appearing unexpectedly on people’s Reading pages - which can be pretty uncomfortable!
Explicit sexual content includes: depictions or detailed discussions of sex acts, detailed descriptions of genitalia, and images (even stylised ones) of the above.
2. All players in the
No exceptions. This is to protect the mods, players, and even Dreamwidth itself. If we find out that you are under 18, this will be cause for a conduct strike or ban from Ryslig.
3. All characters threading in the
Under no circumstances should characters under 18 be involved in threads on the
monsterotica community.
We understand that 18+ players who play minors may want to spectate threads without taking part. However this puts us in an uncomfortable position, so we would ask that you join with an OOC journal in this situation, rather than with a character journal for a character who is under 18.
4. Smut cannot be used for your main Activity Check.
However, it can be used for up to four (4) bonus coins (i.e., up to 40 comments total in your bonus AC can be on the smut comm). All smut used for bonus AC must be game canon (see rule 6) and follow all normal Ryslig rules.
5. Use content warnings.
Just as on the other comms, it is important to warn for common triggers and squicks. This includes warning for sexual content, as not everyone looks at which community a post has been made in!
6. Mark whether smut threads are game canon.
The
monsterotica comm is open to all smut threads in the Ryslig setting, including those which are not game canon, and those with characters not currently in the game. However, to keep things clear, we ask that you mark whether a smut thread is game canon clearly somewhere in the post.
7. Bringing concerns to the mods.
All the general rules of conduct for Ryslig apply to
monsterotica, as does the disciplinary process. If you have concerns about another player’s behaviour in regards to NSFW content or the
monsterotica comm, and you have not been able to resolve these issues through discussion with the player in question, please contact the mods through the MOD CONTACT post, as for concerns with the main game.
The Disciplinary Process section is also collapsed, and you can expand it by clicking on the title to see the details of how the rules are enforced.
