STATE OF THE WORLD

FOG GOD AND FOLLOWERS

Currently weakened and angered due to a significant chunk of her power being sealed away in Felfri. Though monster abilities and God boons will be as reliable as ever, the Fog God herself lurks in her old seats of power, such as Dyster and Lager Woods, coping and seething and licking her wounds as she plots revenge. Her followers will feel a more insistent urge than usual to rip open and consume the lifeblood of humans, to fill them with fear, to remind them that she is still here, and still a force to be reckoned with.

FOURTH GOD AND FOLLOWERS

Currently energized and stable. Elias considers sealing away part of the Fog and gaining a (slight) upper hand in the god conflict a victory, and he marked the monster population with a change of his own on November 4th, 2022 to celebrate. He’s the up-and-coming god of Ryslig Peninsula, and though Haftesal’s under new management, he continues to enjoy the benefits of recent Haftesal-driven technological innovations.

HUMANITY

Shaken and off-balance due to a moon-and-nature-spirit apocalyptic event in October 2023, which may have been reversed by monsters, but as far as humans believe, was also caused by them. Many humans died due to famine, natural disasters, human-on-human violence and cannibalism, and fights with monsters, then revived after the research of Oskar Fernstrom Jr. revealed a way to return the world to its prior state. This has led to many awkward conversations as humans try to rebuild their lives. Some humans are grateful for the second chance; some want revenge on their killers. Opinions on monsters are mixed: some see them as helpful and doing their best while some see them as dangerous maniacs with the power to destroy the world.

THE HAFTESAL SCIENTISTS

Currently confident towards monsters, Haftesal’s people still shun and eject any Fog-aligned monster that makes their way to their city. However, they do feel guilty for not realizing their top brass was plants from Felfri with an explicit anti-Fog mission, and will do their best to win back goodwill through making their technological progress available to all. Now that they’re under new management, they seem ready to live up to their stated purpose of improving the lives of all of Ryslig’s citizens, both human and monster. However, there are cameras throughout Haftesal, and monsters who misbehave, regardless of affiliation, will be banned from re-entry.

MALL OF BAVANIA and the SAFETY FIRST MANNEQUINS

Currently neutral to all Monsters. The Safety First mannequins will not attack anyone unless they attack someone else or attempt to steal from a store. The mall is populated by some humans attempting to do business under the protection of these strange, plastic constructs.

NPCS

FOG GOD

The Fog God is the one who brings people to Ryslig and transforms them into monsters. She controls the fog that periodically blankets the peninsula, and wants to encourage monsters to act freely, and without the inhibitions of human society. The common narrative in human literature is that she was an adversary of the Day and Night gods, whom she killed by her own hand. Her hatred of humankind is no secret, and many believe that monsters were created to punish them.

While she is largely considered to be an antagonistic figure among humankind, she considers the monsters of the peninsula to be her children and loves them, regardless of their attitude towards her. However, this love is more on par with how someone might love a pet, as opposed to how a mother loves her children. She is eloquent and wise, but can be proud and jealous at times. The Fog also generally tries to be genuine to her followers when asked, but her attitude tends to be colored by her own godly perspective.

You can speak to the Fog here.

FOURTH GOD

Born Elias Liewen, the Fourth God was the human son of a mad doctor who siphoned the Fog God's power into his body to create a being powerful enough to oppose her. He was physically attached to and used as the center of the network, until the monsters of Ryslig freed him and he took position as a new god on the peninsula. He hates the Fog God and works primarily against her, and is associated largely with technology as suits his origins in the network and as a former science project.

The Fourth God was granted power when he was only a child, and thus, has generally childish tendencies. He can be playful, and is very mercurial. However, he can also be quite petulant at times if people don’t “play nice” with him, and is generally less forgiving than the Fog. The Fourth also has a tendency to hide and control information, if possible--it's a war, after all, and you can't be too sure what secrets you give out.

You can speak to the Fourth here.

MANA

Mana (short for Manananggal) is a bat-like entity aligned with neither the Fog nor the Fourth. Commonly, she'll appear as a heavily clothed creature. Her true form, beneath the shrouds and hoods, is of a beautiful young woman twisted with bat features: a too-long tongue, pointed fangs, leathery wings, and a torso she can separate from her body at will. She used to be locked in a never-ending battle with a mad horse-headed entity called Tikbalang. Thanks to the help of several monsters, Tikbalang was defeated and Mana took on his old job.

Mana now delivers gifts and fulfills the wishes of the monsters of the peninsula. Though generally quite benevolent, she has a bit of a mischievous streak at times. Since Mana is adjusting to her new job, she’s not perfect with her magic. There are instances in which her magic may backfire or she'll (intentionally or unintentionally) misinterpret someone's request, but it’s never out of malice or with the intent to hurt someone.

You can trade in coins for requests here.

THE PARASITES

The parasites are a hivemind of insect-like creatures that have carved out their niche in Kulen. Although previously hostile towards the monsters, after several hundreds of generations had passed--parasites have very short lifespans, after all--they enthusiastically embrace monsters and humans alike as friends.

The hive likes to "party" (temporarily kidnap monsters and deep-fry non-edible objects), celebrate "The Queen", and deliver gifts as "A Santa". Though their interpretation of social gatherings may be somewhat erroneous, their shenanigans are ultimately harmless. Outside of party hours, the parasites do not allow visitors into their hive, but they will graciously accept any offerings placed at their doorstep.

MONSTER HUNTERS

Individuals that hunt monsters for pleasure or for purpose. Although their activity has diminished over the past few years, there is still a black market out there for monster parts and bounties placed on monsters who are seen as a significant threat to the human population. The main poaching market was dismantled thanks to monster efforts in 2020, but a few stray “freelancers” linger about.

TÅGEVALGTEN

A group of human fanatics that worshipped the Fog God that once took up residence in Rota, though they have scattered since the Fourth Wall event in 2021 and then completely dissolved following their leader's death in October 2021. The Tågevalgten believed that humankind is inherently wicked, and that by accepting the Fog, they would become reborn as monsters in their next life in a process known as “The Emergence”. They dressed themselves in strange clothes and underwent body modifications to mimic monsters, and partook in cannibalistic rituals.

The cult was led by a woman named Tåge, who declared herself to be the only one who will be reborn as a waldgeist. She was desperate to receive any sort of sign from the Fog, to the point where she attempted to summon the dead Day and Night Gods. She got her answer from the Fog by being turned into a new seal for an interdimensional rift and suffering for all eternity.

HISTORY

Long ago, the Day and Night gods were created. They, in turn, create the continent of Skamd and humankind. They bickered frequently, so the Fog god was created to act as a mediator between the two. Unlike the Day and Night gods, the Fog was unable to create her own children, so she created monsters by reshaping humans into new forms.

One day, a war, known only as “The Great War”, broke out between the Day and Night’s followers. They called upon their gods for aid, and the Day and Night gods wreaked havoc and destruction across the land. The war stretched on for a century, and much of the continent was in ruins. Many monsters were killed over the course of the war in an attempt to restore balance. In the end, the Fog killed the Day and Night gods by her own hands, thereby ending the war.

After the fighting died down, the Fog God shrouded the rest of the ruined continent and retreated to the peninsula of Ryslig. Many believe that, to punish humankind, she instilled within her monsters a desire to consume humans. She continues to rule over the land to this day, with only the Fourth to seriously oppose her.
