After some deliberation, between weighing the in-character actions needed to qualify for each tier as well as what boons are provided in return, we have determined that we will not allow characters to "skip" or "jump" tiers as they progress. For its IC narrative purpose, aligning with a god and progressing through their ranks is meant to show commitment from that character; the boons granted are their reward for acting for their appropriate god and sticking with them.
From an OOC perspective, we feel that allowing characters to "skip forward" could result in players pushing their characters to "go hard" in order to get greater rewards more quickly and with less in-game effort. This could result in a hurried "arms race," as characters involved in the god conflict rush to get the greater boons rather than progressing at a more natural pace, but could also push players to have their characters act OOC in order to accomplish one larger, "more impressive" act, rather than build up to that point over weeks and months of character development.
While there are some established time restrictions in the tier progression already -- a character must be aligned for one month before they can advance from tier 1 to tier 2, and a character must be played in-game for four months before they can qualify to advance to the priest tier -- we intend to add additional time buffers between tiers 2 and 3, to keep the overall pace more manageable.
One exception we may allow: if a character who was dropped at a higher tier and is reapped by that same player later with their game experiences intact, we may either allow them to resume where they left off, or loosen the qualifications needed for that character to advance back to where they left off.
