SEA

GENERAL INFORMATION

The seas that touch Ryslig peninsula do not have any set names. If asked, the inhabitants simply call the water 'the sea'. The waters differ from area to area, sometimes hot even during the winter months, other times so cold that people will quickly freeze to death in just a few minutes.

Icebergs are not common, but seen once in a while during winter months. Most fishermen stay close to Vandare and do not venture out too much. Women are generally seen as ill omen when fishing, and cats are frequently brought on board, apparently with the power to detect the monsters that might lurk in the sea.

Away from the eyes of most of the populace, Ryslig has a surprising amount of underwater areas that only creatures that can breath underwater can visit. Moreover, while only some of the rivers are visible above ground, they actually continue in some cases, bridging from one side of the sea to the other. On the map above, you (players) can see the original land line (visible from above on land) in the more transparent color, and the clear green is the water roads that sometimes descend thousand of meters under, making it impossible for most monsters to pass (even if some do not require air, the crushing pressure will do them in).

Franfalle Line

The dangerous pieces of stone that litter the line are a danger to any ship or diver. Knowledge of how to maneuver in these rocks and ever-moving currents is a skill passed down from generation to generation. Many ships have fallen to the line, their contents and human cargo spilled into the rocks, despite the buoys that circle it as warning to others. The Vandare lighthouse was built due to many deaths involving ships crashing into the line at night.

There is a tale popular amongst storytellers that says that the line is not natural, but erected via magic by a powerful follower of the Day and Night Gods fleeing and trying to protect Ryslig from the Fog God's wrath and her sea serpent monsters that would swallow ships whole. The fishmen of Vandare were given the secret knowledge and words of where to go, and each clan guards their area jealousy from others.

With some of the best fishing in all of Ryslig, fishmen, both old and new continue to risk wave and stone for fish and fortune.

HIDDEN LAND AREAS

Pirate's Cove
Hidden from view even more than Franfall, the entrance to pirates cove is actually clearly hidden by many stones on the edge that case even harpies to think that the water's edge is nothing more than steep mountains. What's more is that the stones tend to move, making sure that their position makes it impossible to see the hidden area behind them.

But going closer, one will notice that the mountains begin to twist and even a small ship could slip inside, and into an underground grotto that spans thousand of miles. Just be careful moving in! A troll might be able to stop the stones from moving, but others creatures will have to be careful going in.

Once inside, water and stone continues for what seems like forever. Leftovers from what looks like ships and encampments suggests that this was one a popular place for men to live. The tattered cloths and clothing will quickly make some of them realize that these may have been pirates. Unfortunately, there is no treasure to be found, aside from a few ancient gold coins that might be worth something and dead bodies of the poor men caught in sea battles or left here to die.

MOURNER'S CAVE
The second cave is only accessible by sea and leads to an underground beach. Pleasant as it may seem at first, the shore is rocky with white pebbles that, upon inspection, are eroded bone. Similarly to the land caves above, the gigantic cavern is completely covered in the same layered, indecipherable scrawling. Which is a feat since this cave is pretty huge (although obviously not as nice as the one pictured). Unlike its above-ground sibling, this cave is not without its threats. Crabs the size of cars dwell here and they are hostile and creepy, due to the human-like faces on their backs. Yes, those faces are capable of screaming and yes, monsters will hear it.

See the mountains above.

NOTABLE CREATURES: Giant enemy Monster Crabs
Monster's Pearl
While the Monster's Pearl can be much more deadly than Franfalle Line, it is much more avoidable, being inward close to Castle Strand. The hole seems to continue doward forever. Any monster who falls into the Monster's Pearl will be dragged before being violently slung into the air upwards after a short while, almost like a whale's breathing hole.

While this might have once been a popular 'sport', the dangers of falling back into the water (or even on land) causes most humans to avoid it. Additionally, Mercreature and Kelpie will find themselves frightened and avoid it as much as possible.

NOTABLE CREATURES: A GIANT HOLE
Trall Cavern
Named after the explorer who discovered it (or so it is said), Trall Cavern has since been lost from most maps. Located in the upper area of Ryslig, it is only known to a few people, as most lack the means to visit it. This is due to the fact that the "cavern" is an inward underground salty body of water that spans a large part of land, away from the winter's cold front and summer's heat, and with hot rocks running right under it that keep it warm, it stays around 30C (86F) all year long, making it a popular breeding ground for all sorts of fish and underwater creatures.

As Ryslig Scuba Diving is a relatively new scene, its location would be easier found by an explorative mercreature or kelpie. Any other monster would either require a spell to survive under water as there are no air pockets to be found anywhere its entire length...which gives the question of who this Trall was, and how did he discover this cavern in the first place.

Its only piece of remaining legacy is that the road leading to Tunn was placed close to its mouth.

NOTABLE CREATURES: 'Exotic' fish and sea creatures.
