NAGA
|
Nagas are snake-like creatures that feed on humans and produce an extremely toxic venom. They can be extremely fast, both on land and in water, and can strike an unsuspecting victim from up to a few feet away in under a second. Snakes (Boas, Cobras, Pythons, Vipers, etc), Legless Lizards, Glass Lizards, Worms, and Caterpillars are welcome. Artwork generously donated and submitted by players as an example of this monster in various forms. This can give you an idea of what you can do with this monster. Want to donate? (frozen comment) FAQ
MONSTER ABILITIES:
Could an antivenom be produced from the venom of a Naga, or is it too supernaturally toxic for that?
It's too toxic for an antivenom, alas.
Can my Naga spit venom?
Yes, that's allowed.
If I were to pick a species that produces neurotoxin, could I replace the typical Naga venom with this?
Unfortunately, a neurotoxin would need to be purchased as an upgraded ability!
Can the snakes on a Naga's head be venomous as well?
The snakes can be venomous, but it would be far less than the venom from a Naga's fangs.
If a human or monster is turned to stone, are they still fully aware throughout their ordeal?
This would be up to the player! However, if the character being petrified was a monster both players would have to agree.
If a monster is turned to stone by a Naga, can we say that the fog restores them, or is Naga venom truly the only thing that can fix them?
Yes, the fog can restore them!
About how long does the hypnotic effect of a Naga's tail rattle last?
The effect usually lasts as long as the rattling sound can be heard, but has the potential to linger a while longer.
Cold-blooded animals can hold their breath for much longer, so can Nagas go underwater for extended amounts of time, keeping this in mind?
At maximum, they might be able to hold their breath for 7-8 minutes. Also, they would have a lot more issues, since the naturally colder temperature of the water will make them much more sluggish, which would make getting out really hard. They also do not have a Merperson's or a Kelpie's ability to withstand water pressure easily, so they can't go too deep underwater.
MONSTER BODIES AND CHANGES:
Is the forked tongue purely cosmetic, or would the Naga be able to smell with it as normal snakes do?
Smelling with it is allowed.
About Naga heat vision, could the tongue be used to as a heat-sensory organ of sorts?
Yes!
Some venomous snakes, including rattlesnakes, periodically shed their fangs. Would this also be okay to do?
That is A-okay.
Can the cobra-like hood be a loose flap of scaly skin attached to the character's neck, which can be flipped up at will?
Yes!
For worm-based Naga, could leech mouth parts work as a substitute for the traditional, mandatory snake fangs?
Yes! This is one of those instances where a species-specific substitute for a mandatory trait exists.
About the mirror cracking/shattering trait, is that strictly for mirrors, or does it extend to any reflective surface that isn't water (e.g. windows, TV screens)?
That's up to you.

This obviously does not affect me at all, but it came up with a friend in casual conversation:
Nagas are required to have "Snake-like eyes with slit pupils."
However, lots of snakes have round pupils. Just a few examples: rat snakes, cobras, taipans, boomslangs, mambas. Many other highly recognizable snakes are in the same boat.
Quote the friend: "vertical slit pupils tend to be confined to vipers, pythons, and boas just in general". (Then: "I do take back that quote. I forgot about lamprophiidae/nae and dipsadidae/nae" and etc)
So: are slit pupils required across the board even if taking inspiration from species with round pupils?

After talking it over with the team, we've decided that rounded pupils are allowed for Nagas, so long as it's counterbalanced with an unnatural iris color (red, orange, etc) for that extra monster flair. We'll be tweaking the Bestiary's wording to reflect this.
