WEREWOLF
|
Werewolves are half-man, half-wolf creatures that normally transform only during a full moon. In Ryslig, however, Werewolves transform every night at sunset and will not change back until they see the sun. When not transformed, they retain most of their normal human appearance.
Despite their name, Werewolves can resemble any type of canine. Wolves, Tanuki, Foxes, Hyenas, Tasmanian wolves, Jackals, Dogs, Coyotes, Dhole, Weasels, Otters, Mongoose and Meerkats are allowed. Think in the subfamilies Mustelinae, Lutrinae, Ictonychinae. Similar creatures from a character's homeworld are also allowed. (frozen comment) FAQ
FEEDING:
It says Werewolves are 'strictly carnivores when it comes to their monstrous feedings'. Does this mean they can only eat meat? Or can they still eat other things when they feel like it?
That's up to you. You can either make your Werewolf fully carnivorous (and become ill from other kinds of food), or the Werewolf can still digest a salad perfectly fine. It's only for the monster hunger that meat must be consumed.
If I choose to have my Werewolf capable of digesting non-meat foods, will chocolate still make my Werewolf sick?
That is also up to you.
MONSTER ABILITIES:
So the change to full Werewolf isn't just a full moon thing? This happens every single night?
Correct! And it lasts 24/7 when the fog is out, as well.
Is the transformation very physical and painful, or is it more of a smooth, painless magical girl transformation?
Player's choice.
What happens to my character's clothes when they transform?
You can decide if they need to buy new clothes all the time (ie tearing every time they change) or if their clothes incorporates or disappears until they turn back.
Changing back to human form only happens when they see the sun? So what if they're underground, or in a room with the windows blocked?
Then they'll be stuck in their Werewolf form.
Since Werewolves transform at night, do they transform all at once with their first change, or can they still undergo a few minor changes for the first few months until the mandatory change time limit is reached?
It's up to you! Feel free to have your character either explode into full Werewolf that very first night of the transformation log, or spread the changes out over time.
The travel form of wolf/dog/etc. is not limited to night time, right? Werewolves can do this during the day too?
Correct!
Can I have some more information about the Full Moon form? What do you mean when you say "more visually extravagant"?
The Full Moon form is something the mod team added to the Bestiary in July 2023, to further differentiate the Werewolf from the Werebear. On the day leading up to the full moon, the Werewolf will already be able to change into their night form in broad daylight. Once the full moon has risen, they will then be able to take on their Full Moon form. The Werewolf may grow up to 1.5x the size of their typical night form, and toss in a few additional aesthetic touches. How about decaying bone claws, spikes jutting out of the spine or some eerie glowing markings along their body? This form can look similar to the Werewolf's Fog form, but can also hold a drastically different design. When coupled with the optional Lunar Influence trait, this Full Moon Werewolf will also be stronger than usual.
Do I have to have the Lunar Influence trait in order for my Werewolf to have this Full Moon form? Or vice versa?
No, you don't. They make a fine combination, but you can have one without the other.
How do I know when it's a full moon in Ryslig?
We'll mark it on the calendar.
Can I have more information about this bite which causes a deadly infection? How does that work? Are the Werewolf's teeth laced with something?
The bite itself doesn't involve any kind of toxin. It just causes infection and/or disease the way a dog bite would. For a human, this infection would be fatal, as it's quite difficult to treat. It can have milder effects (aches and pains, minor illness, etc.) on other monsters with player permission.
Is the infection bacterial or viral?
... Yes.
Can I play around with the symptoms of this infection? Can it match an illness found in my character's canon?
Sure!
Do the Werewolf abilities only function when the character is in their Werewolf, canine and/or Full Moon forms? Or do these abilities still apply even during the day when they're in human form?
That choice is yours to make. They're certainly allowed to have those abilities in human form, but if you want to make your Werewolf even weaker as a human, you can do that.
MONSTER BODIES AND CHANGES:
Can I design a hairless Werewolf?
Yes, but also no. A hairless Werewolf is technically a bit of a misnomer, since fur is still required on the mandatory locations. However, you are allowed to make the fur very, very short- as an example, a Werewolf themed off of the Xoloitzcuintli would be perfectly acceptable! They will not be able to grow longer/more substantial fur later on during the game.
Can my Werewolf have an extra tail (or multiple extra tails) in their night form if it's purely cosmetic?
Yes. Live those nine-tailed fox dreams!
Since otters and some dog breeds have this, can my Werewolf have webbed paws?
As long as it's just a cosmetic change and doesn't give them a significant advantage, yes!
Werebears can grow up to twice the size of their humanoid form when transformed. What about Werewolves? Any height increase at all when they go into their wolf form?
Typically, no. At most, they might gain some inches because their legs and feet become more animalistic, but that's the extent of it.
What about growing smaller instead, when based on a smaller canine?
Sure, that's fine!
Can the Werewolf's pack instinct also apply to non-Werewolf friends?
Yes!
If a Werewolf is killed while transformed, will the corpse remain transformed even after daybreak, or will the corpse shift back to human when the sun comes out?
When you die, your corpse remains as the form it was in right before death. So if a Werewolf was killed in night form, they would stay that way even when the sun comes out. Please also keep in mind that a monster's body will disappear when it is resurrected.
How would an eclipse affect a Werewolf?
Eclipses are rare in Ryslig, and would only be seen as part of a plot. If such an instance were to occur in the future, details of how it affects monsters will either be included in the OOC information, or you can raise it as a question.
