SHADE
|
Shades are incorporeal creatures with a connection to the night. They are known for their shapeshifting abilities and much like Demons, they feed on souls. Shades do not have any particular animal to be based upon. Artwork generously donated and submitted by players as an example of this monster in various forms. This can give you an idea of what you can do with this monster. Want to donate? (frozen comment) FAQ
MONSTER ABILITIES:
If my Shade possesses a small, fast object like a R.C. car, will it become a Travel form with speed boon?
No, sorry! Shades are limited to Stealth form only, so the car will move as fast as it normally would and would have the Stealth boon of a disguise spell.
Does the solidity ability mean that Shades can become fully human/made of flesh again with concentration?
No. What this means is that they become tangible, so others can touch them and they can feel this touch in turn. However, this does not mean they're human again. Shades can never regain their true organic bodies. In terms of appearance, their solid form can look like flesh, it can look like a mist, it can even look like space, but the Shade's grayscale complexion will always remain.
Can Shades become solid in "patches" (e.g. solid head, shadow everything else) or should they "toggle" definitively from shadow to solid?
It would require focus, but yes, it's possible to only solidify one portion of their body.
When taking solid form, does a Shade cast a shadow?
We will leave that up to the players!
Are Shades solid enough to the touch for physical intimacy, or is it too distracting for them to hold their focus?
Novice Shades would have difficulty with it, and would likely tire quickly and/or slip in and out of their tangible state. However, once a character has had time to practice, they're perfectly capable of maintaining their solidity long enough for a snuggle. Or a 'snuggle'. They can also attempt intimacy while incorporeal. It's sure to lead to some interesting feelings on both sides. Or how about possessing the person you'd like to be intimate with, since physical feelings are shared during possession?
Can a Shade shapeshift into a different form and make that form solid at the same time?
It would take an extensive amount of concentration to shapeshift and make themselves solid, but it is possible with training. Keep in mind that the farther you go from a standard form, the harder it is to sustain: something like an eight armed horned beast would require an impressive amount of focus, and would, even for an experienced Shade, likely break down in combat (and cause minimal damage), whereas only granting themselves sharp teeth or horns would stand a better chance of functioning as an additional feature.
Can I have a bit more information about the pain removal ability when it comes to touching the other person? Is this permanent?
No, it's not permanent. When a Shade takes on another person's pain like that, it will only last while the Shade is touching the injured person. You could upgrade the ability to be permanent, though.
Can I have a bit more information about the pain removal ability when it comes to possession?
All physical feelings are shared when a Shade possesses someone, though the Shade may also choose to take the pain all for themselves and spare their host from it. Shades may also take on the host's emotional pain through possession, if they wish.
The Stealth form states that possessing a small object will protect a Shade from sunlight. What about possessing larger objects or people?
Same deal! Just keep in mind that when it comes to anything larger than the average cat, there's a time limit of one (cumulative) hour a day. Furthermore, just as with Stealth form, being out in direct sunlight while possessing something/someone will make a Shade nervous.
Do Shades possessing a person have any sort of read on that person's feelings or thoughts?
They can have a sort of very hazy general feeling but nothing very concrete. They can't really read thoughts.
Can the Shade communicate with their living host in some way? And to clarify, can a Shade force a person to move while the person remains aware, or does the Shade just act as a passenger with no control?
Internal, mental debates between the possessee and possessor are possible, and control of the host's motor skills is a potential side-effect versus just being a passive presence, provided the other player is okay with it when this pertains to another playable character.
Can a Shade possess another Shade?
In order for a Shade to possess something, it must be corporeal, so no Shade-on-Shade possession, unfortunately! They're welcome to try physically grabbing each other, but even if the 'host' Shade were to try and take on their solid form, the one attempting possession will find there's nothing to hold on to in another Shade.
What happens if a Shade were to possess the same person repeatedly? Would it harm them?
Using their possession skill on the same human multiple times in a row would cause damage to their victim's mind. While their body would be fine, the victim's mind would begin to grow damaged, leading to symptoms that worsen as the Shade continues to re-possess them. This effect would not happen with monster victims unless with the other player's permission.
About the 'one cumulative hour a day' rule, can a Shade possess multiple different people a day if the total time is less than one hour?
Yes! As long as the total amount of time a shade possesses someone in the day reaches no more than one hour, they can possess multiple people in a day. The limitation of "once per day" is only meant that they cannot possess someone for one hour, get out, and then re-possess them for another hour.
Can a Shade levitate the person they're possessing?
They would only be able to do it for a matter of seconds and it would leave them extremely drained afterwards, but it would be possible!
Can Shades take possession of a dead person?
Yes. It doesn't matter how long they've been dead. A corpse is a corpse.
What if it's an actual skeleton? Can they move a full skeleton around?
No, they can't. Since the bones are no attached to one another, the Shade's presence would likely move to one particular bone. Best chance outcome, they could possess the skull, minus the lower jaw.
Does the ability to become invisible affect whatever the Shade is wearing or holding on to at the time (kind of similar how intangibility works)? How long do these short periods last and when can they be used again?
Whether clothes or items become invisible as well is up to you. The short periods are less than twenty minutes at a time, and they can be used about 1-2 times per day but use up a lot of the Shade's energy, making it quicker for them to get hungry.
Is there a hard limit to how high up a Shade can levitate?
The limit would be that they can float to twice their height above any surface. Levitation is sort of more like working with magnets than flying, so keep in mind that the further away from the ground (or water, etc) they are, the more difficult it will become, until they reach their max height. Flying off of a cliff or anything similar would cause them to slowly float to the ground.
Since Shades can reach inside a person's body to remove their soul, can they also reach inside to mess around with their organs?
A Shade reaching into someone's body to remove their soul must have at least that limb be incorporeal; as such they would not be able to affect someone physically, up to and including damaging or moving their organs. If a Shade attempted to take solid form while inside someone (or something) they would get equally damaged.
Can a Shade, say, avoid being hurt from a fall by sliding incorporeally into the ground?
Yes. Though they may have a bit of trouble pulling themselves out again.
MONSTER BODIES AND CHANGES:
Can Shades touch other Shades? Do they feel comparatively physical to each other?
This is up to player discretion!
Because Shades are incorporeal, does this mean they can't be shot, stabbed, or otherwise injured? In other words, can they ONLY be killed by light?
While Shades are incorporeal, they cannot be physically injured; while they are taking on a "solid human form," they can. Of course, the reverse also applies - a Shade must be taking on a solid form to truly affect others physically.
Would a cloak adequately protect a Shade from melting away in a brightly lit room? What about daylight?
Whether a cloak protects a Shade in a brightly lit room is up to player discretion. For something to protect a shade from sunlight, it would need to block out all the light entirely, so a cloak would most likely not qualify.
Can Shades still have functional organs?
That would be up to you. If you want to have pulsating organs in the middle of shadowy mist, we certain won't stop horrific ideas.
Can Shades still consume normal food, or would it fall through them?
It's up to you whether they can still eat meals like that, but it won't make them feel 'full'. Only souls will sate their hunger.
Do Shades have a heartbeat?
Shades are still alive, so they would have a heartbeat, but a faint one, and might not sound quite like a heartbeat at all.
Can Shades bleed? If so, what would it look like?
It's up to players whether their Shades bleed blood, smoke, a weird black liquid, or some combination.
If a Shade were to lose a body part while in their solid form, would the part that's cut off stay solid or turn back into shadow?
That's up to player discretion!
Does a Shade have any mass at all when intangible?
When intangible, they have no mass.
Can Shades go swimming? What if they go underwater?
In order to interact with water other than just levitating over it in this form, they'd have to be in their tangible form. They're not water dwelling creatures, so they can't stay submerged indefinitely without complication: their bodies can't regulate water as well as a mermaid or a kelpie, and after a while they'd feel sick and sluggish on an increasingly noticeable scale. After twenty minutes the sickness would be debilitating; after a half hour, they'd be completely unconscious and would drown.
Shades have a weakness to light and sunlight will cause them to shrink. What about other types of light? Electrical, glow from fires, etc.?
Sunlight is the main source of harm for a Shade. Whether any other type of light, such as electrical, affects a Shade is up to player discretion.
Is sunlight painful to a Shade? Or does it just cause some sort of discomfort?
It is up to you if your Shade feels pain, but eventually a Shade in sunlight would die (it would take some time, however).
Does taking a solid human form offer any protection from that, or would they still slowly 'burn away' if exposed to direct sunlight?
Trying to take a substantial human form in direct sunlight would be incredibly difficult, and would offer no protection from the sun.
