GARGOYLE

BASIC INFO Gargoyles are reptilian creatures that are strictly nocturnal, as they turn to stone when exposed to sunlight. Most prefer to live in roosts high above ground, and hunt by swooping down on their prey much like Harpies. MANDATORY CHANGES ● Large, scaly wings capable of flight. ● Lizard-like claws in place of fingernails and toenails. ● Sharp fangs instead of teeth. ● Scales on the upper arms, shoulders, and back. Accents of either fur or feathers are allowed to complement this anywhere on the body, but the scales must still be present in the mandatory areas. ● Scaly, talon-like feet capable of grasping. ● Excellent night vision and sharper eyesight. Gargoyles can make out small details, even from up in the air. ● An affinity for fire magic. Despite their weakness to sunlight, Gargoyles can create fireballs in their hands to hurl at their enemies, and can make their own skin so hot it burns to touch. They may also breathe fire. ● Immunity to fire. ● Weakness to sunlight. Direct exposure will turn the Gargoyle into stone (or jade, or gold, or crystal - anything statues can be made of is fair game) until the sunlight no longer touches them, either because night has fallen or because they've been covered up. They are almost indestructible in statue form, but should try to avoid being in flight when the sun rises. ● The need to feed on human flesh. This need may be satiated by accepting it from others, but more often than not, the Gargoyle will be compelled to choose their own targets for a fresh kill. ● A strong hunting instinct. When a Gargoyle is hungry, they will develop the urge to chase humans down and isolate them from a group through purposeful herding, trickery and waiting for the right opportunity to strike. Gargoyles will often take out their prey by either attacking them directly, or lifting them off the ground and dropping them from great heights. [back to top] OPTIONAL CHANGES ● Any psychological changes are welcome! Feel free to pull from real world myths, canon creatures of this variety, or any other source! ● A fog form. This is an exaggerated version of their monster form that appears only during the fog and is a chance to make your monster more "horrifying" during the fog. ● Travel form: the ability to take the form of a lizard at any time, or any other animal the monster design is based on. In this form, the character will look like a normal lizard, and may have gliding-capable membranes along its sides, which retract when not in use to preserve the disguise. In this form, the Gargoyle will be able to move quickly across the ground and up vertical surfaces. However, they will also be more vulnerable. ● Two horns on the head that vary in size and shape. ● Scales on any other part of the body. ● Spikes on any part of their body. ● Any number of dragon-like facial features, from yellow eyes to a forked tongue to something fully dragon-like. ● A long, reptilian tail. ● The ability to influence the actions of humans by giving them commands while making eye contact. ● A proud nature. Gargoyles are both easily insulted and easily flattered. ● A hoarding instinct. Gargoyles can be very greedy and like to hold on to anything nice they've found, especially if it's shiny. MONSTER ABILITIES:

Tell me more about the Travel form. Does the gliding membrane mean my monster can't fly?
Correct! True flight is not possible, but skillful gliding is.

Gargoyles can make their own skin so hot it burns to touch. Can this process give off light? Glow with heat?
This would be possible, yes! However, it would not affect monsters who are weak against light.


MONSTER BODIES AND CHANGES:

How much of a Gargoyle must be exposed to sunlight to turn to stone? Does the stone transformation affect their entire body in one go, or just the section that's been exposed to light?
That is up to you. You can either play it so that the entire Gargoyle turns to stone immediately, or that sunlight will only change the area exposed to light. Either way, covering the stone up to shield it from sunlight will return it to normal.

What kind of stone does my Gargoyle turn into?
Player's choice! It can be typical rock, it can be crystal, it can be precious gem... As long as it's one type of stone, it's all good.

When Gargoyles get turned to stone in sunlight, does that include anything they're wearing/carrying?
That is up to the player.

Is turning into a statue like sleeping for Gargoyles? Do they dream?
That is up to the players! If you prefer your character to dream/sleep while in statue form, it wouldn't negatively affect their ability to sleep normally aside from just having a surplus of rest. ... Unless you want it to affect their normal sleep schedule.

So a Gargoyle could also be aware of everything that's happening around them while stuck in statue form?
Yes.

Does a Gargoyle turn to stone through and through, or is it just their outside that hardens, with flesh on the inside?
That is up to you.

Can a Gargoyle be cold-blooded?
Yes.

Do Gargoyle wings need to take the traditional bat-wing shape, or can they be segmented?
So long as it's purely cosmetic and still somewhat similar to bat wings, it's allowed!

Can Gargoyles have their wings attached to their arms instead of their backs, for a more realistic bat-like look?
Yes, but they can only have one set of wings.

How flexible can a Gargoyle's tail be? And how strong?
Flexibility can be either, depending on your preference. They're not strong enough to bench press or do more than a heavy backhand, but they could function in combat.

Are the scales sturdy enough to function as natural armor or are they no more sturdy than any non-scaled monster?
The scales are more sturdy than skin, but not impenetrable.

Are Gargoyles allowed to shed their skin like lizards do?
Yes.

Is it alright for Gargoyles to have spiny, finny ears, like you sometimes see in depictions of dragons?
Yes, so long as they don't add to the Gargoyle's hearing.

Is it okay for Gargoyles to have digitigrade legs in addition to talons?
Yes.

My Gargoyle is based on a chameleon. Can they have the color-changing camouflage?
The notion that chameleons change colors to camouflage themselves is actually a myth. There are many reasons why chameleons change color, and blending into their environment is not the main purpose. That said, it's possible for a chameleon-based Gargoyle to do limited color changes, using the colors from the chameleon they're based on, but if they want to upgrade it to true camouflage, they'll have to turn to either one of the reward systems.

Is it possible for a Gargoyle to sport multiple heads, hydra style?
Not in their default form. Feel free to use it in Fog form, though!

About hoarding, can their greed extend to making them jealous/possessive of people close to them?
Of course.

Just had the thought, figured I'd ask for the clarity. Does the gargoyle travel form also turn to stone during the day? Stone lizard ahoy?

When a monster goes into either Travel or Stealth form, their specific weaknesses will still apply, unless specified otherwise in the monster's respective Bestiary page. So yes, stone lizard ahoy!

Question! If gargoyles have to be any material that statues are made from... Can one be made of metal? Iron, perhaps?
