TROLL
|
|
Trolls are large, aggressive creatures feared for their potential to unleash massive physical strength. Trolls tend to prefer living underground or in caves, and while they aren't usually associated with magic, they are quite adept at mimicry. A Troll's body can be made up out of multiple types of stones and semi-precious stones. However, there may only be one type of precious stone worked into the body. (Precious stones are diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires.) The tail can come from any type of animal. This includes extinct animals, and animals from a character's home world. (frozen comment) FAQ
MONSTER ABILITIES
When my Troll uses their ability to grown in size, will their clothes grow with them?
That's up to you!
When the bestiary says that a Troll can use their growth and mimicry abilities "for the cumulative duration of one hour a day" what does this mean?
Cumulative means the total amount of something when it's all added together. So the ability could, for example, be used for half an hour and then for another half hour. When it comes to mimicry, you may switch to different forms as well. Five minutes with one disguise, ten minutes with another, etc. There's no limit to the amount of disguises, but all the time the ability is used will still add up to that hour a day.
Can the mimicry ability be used to mimic the Troll's pre-transformation, normal human form? What about normal animals?
Yes to both! Mimicry has a wide range of uses.
How exactly does a Troll's earth control work?
It's a power based on magic. They don't need to maintain contact with the rock they're moving, and can instead move/levitate it so long as it's within their 'range'. (We leave this range up to player discretion, but can be assumed to be roughly line of sight.) The larger the object, the harder it to move it.
Is it only straight rock they can move, or does cement and pavement count?
Anything that has rock worked into it as a key 'ingredient', so cement and pavement can work.
Can they create walls with it, or do the sorts of tricks Earthbenders can in Avatar The Last Airbender, like creating spikes of earth or small floating platforms
They can, but again, only in visual range.
What about metalbending or lavabending? Can Trolls move metal or magma?
No. While Goblins are able to use their elemental Earth powers to affect materials like that, a Troll will have extreme difficulty and will have to buy a power upgrade first.
Can Trolls pool their powers to move much bigger rocks together?
If a sole Troll's power is 1x, the second one will elevate it to 1.5x etc. This may seem like two Trolls aren't as strong, but you have to keep in consideration what a Troll can lift by their own. If the goal is to lift the type of boulder that would terrify Indiana Jones, that second Troll may just be what's needed to get it airborne.
Can Trolls survive better in low-oxygen environments than most monsters, what with their inclination to spend a lot of time underground, or do they have to take the time to make sure their tunnels are all properly ventilated?
The latter. Trolls will have to take care all their tunnels allow for enough oxygen.
Since Trolls love to be underground and can create their own tunnels, I'd like some more information. What sort of rock are we dealing with in Ryslig peninsula? Are there precious/semiprecious minerals to be dug up if persistent enough?
There aren't that many precious minerals to dig up unless the Troll goes down for a while, since the citizens of the Ryslig peninsula have already gotten to most of it themselves. Honestly for quality and quantity, we're fine with you deciding for yourself, as long as it's not exaggerating. So no 500 gold bars. There is a lot of clay near the ocean. Hundreds of geodes around the Brasa volcano with very few diamonds (and yes, that would require digging near a volcano). There are a few fossils, animals and dead humans grave sites of long ago withstanding. There isn't anything too remarkable to be found, though. It's all typical stuff.
MONSTER BODIES AND CHANGES
So my monster type can incorporate any type of normal stone, crystals and even polished precious stones? What are the restrictions on this, if any?
TBA, but also, when these stones are broken off they will take some time to regrow. This will be faster during fog days.
Can I also incorporate asphalt or concrete?
Sure!
Can the stones glow when the Troll is emotional, or when casting magic, or just in general?
That counts as aesthetic flair, so yes, absolutely.
How much tougher is Troll skin?
Rock-hard! Especially when taking the optional trait of 'thicker skin with a rougher, more rocky texture'. But even without that, the average monster have trouble biting through it. Arrows would have trouble finding their mark as well.
What do you expect from these 'rough, bumpy horns'?
These tend to be more like nubs. Unlike a Minotaur, whose horns which could be huge and suited for impaling, a Troll's are more like extensions of their rock formations. They would be no bigger than their own head, but tend to be much smaller, especially when there are several pairs of these horns involved.
Instead of an extra (set of) eye(s) which can see heat signatures, am I allowed to replace the Troll's normal eyes with (one of) these heat signature eyes?
Yes!
Would Trolls be able to have cracks in their skin to reveal stone/metal underneath? For example: mimicking veins of copper in their skin.
That counts as aesthetic flair and is allowed, yes. Keep in mind that as with normal troll growths, "mining" or generally removing them would be painful, and would take time to grow back.
Can a Troll's rocks grow moss?
The rocks can grow moss, but this would take time and would require the Troll to actively want to have moss. Additionally, this would probably only happen during summer, since the winter would kill it off rather quickly.
Can there be amber worked into my Troll's design? And if so, can there be fossilized insects inside?
Sure! These insects will be perfectly normal, not relics of Ryslig's ancient history. (By which we mean, no monster mosquitoes from Ryslig's Jurassic age.)
Would it be possible for a Troll to grow naturally magnetic rocks? Or for a Troll with metal-heavy rocks to become magnetized?
This would not be possible. Because Simulacrum have a weakness to magnets, it would count as an additional ability to be magnetized at all times.
Would exposure to direct sunlight burn a Troll, or is it more of a situation where exposure makes them feel weak and tired?
Sunlight weakens them substantially, but if you'd like to have a more debilitating vulnerability, you can opt to give them some burns to go along with it.
There's a lot of lore involving Trolls turning to stone when sunlight hits them. Could some sort of petrification state or similar be used as a side effect of the sun weakness?
Typically in Ryslig, turning to stone in the light of the sun is a Gargoyle's reaction. That said, we're never against adding more weaknesses of your own making. For example, a Troll can still be petrified by opting for optional adverse effects with increased sunlight exposure, where the Troll's body begins to break down. They will stiffen and have difficulty moving their limbs and extremities, which may worsen until parts of them begin to crack or fall off from the strain. Continued exposure will eventually kill the Troll.
