GOBLIN
|
|
Unlike their more ethereal Faerie cousins, Goblins are down to earth, fun-loving creatures whose connection to the elemental and material world means they love the high-end and the luxurious. Though they lack a Faerie's wings, they have the highest capacity for magic of all the creatures on Ryslig. Goblins have no special species. (frozen comment) FAQ
FEEDING:
Would a Goblin be able to feed on a victim within a dream they have made? Or does the victim need to be awake?
Setting up a nightmare trap to feed on a victim sounds like a really neat idea, go for it!
MONSTER ABILITIES:
Tell me more about the Goblin's elemental form. How does this work? Can you give some examples?
The Goblin's elemental form can take on the boons of either a Travel form or a Stealth form, depending on the form they take. For example: a small flame, a rock or a puddle of water would be a Stealth form, as these things cannot move very fast (or at all). They would receive the additional enchantment of not being as easily identifiable as a monster in disguise. If a Goblin were to choose to become a cloud or a breeze, that would typically fall under Travel form rules, and would give the Goblin the 1.5x speed boost. Things such as metal, ice or glass also fall under options to choose from for this form. Whereas most monsters are limited to a single Stealth or Travel form, the Goblin may choose their element every time they transform.
Does Goblin magic require casting?
That is up to you!
What counts as elemental magic, and what doesn't?
As per 2023, our new stance on elements is the following: Things such as light, dark, spirit, nature/wood are not considered elements Goblins have in their base magic. They have only the four base elements of air, water, fire and earth. However, earth is a very wide element in itself, since many things come from the ground and hold the same base components. This includes sand, glass, minerals, precious gems and metals. Pure minerals and metals will be more difficult to control since it's strayed further away from typical soil and rocks, but not impossible. Ice and vapor fall under water, so those can be controlled as well. In regards to fire, lightning does not fall under the fire umbrella, as it's tied very heavily to plasma, which is one of the elements Nephilim may control.
What can they conjure with their magic, and what can't they conjure?
Goblins cannot make rocks (or related Earth substances) appear, nor water. They can only conjure fire or wind, so long as oxygen is present in the air around them to manipulate. They cannot create matter out of thin air.
How big can the rocks/gems/shards of glass/whatever be that a Goblin can control?
Roughly the size of one's palm, maybe add a few inches if the character is especially skilled. Anything larger requires a power upgrade.
What about bloodbending? Turning someone's internal fluids to ice?
Bloodbending a human or turning their internal water to ice is possible with enough practice. Doing this with a fellow monster is only possible if the player gives express permission.
And taking someone's oxygen away to suffocate them?
Just as Goblins may manipulate the flow of oxygen around them to create breezes or gusts of wind, they could steer the oxygen away from a person's lungs to suffocate them. (With player permission if this is applied to another monster.) The oxygen will not disappear, it will simply be moved out of the person's proverbial reach.
When Goblins 'fly', they basically push themselves using their wind magic. Would they be able to do this to another person with practice?
Yes! This is very dangerous though, as the person flying will not be in sync with the wind that's being sent their way and therefore can't use it to maintain balance for themselves. They may fall out of the wind stream as a result.
Do Goblins control the content of any nightmares/hallucinations they cause?
Goblins have full control of the nightmares they cause (although inexperienced Goblins might mess up sometimes).
When a Goblin gives someone a nightmare, are they present in the dream somehow? Or do they just send the nightmare and don't know what happens inside it?
Goblins have full control over the nightmares they cause, so if you would like your Goblin to be ‘present,’ they absolutely can. Obviously, this magic would require practice and concentration for a fledgling Goblin to master.
Do the victims have to be asleep for the Goblin to send them a nightmare, or do they fall asleep when subjected to nightmare magic?
The victim will experience the nightmare when they go to sleep or pass out (a knock upside the head would count). Waking hallucinations and encouraging the victim to sleep via dark magic is more advanced, and would take concentration and practice.
Can hallucinations be auditory only?
Yes!
To what degree can a Goblin rely on suggestion to make a nightmare/hallucination specific to a target's fear/memory, if any? (Assuming that the Goblin is aware of the fear/memory, but lacks knowledge of its details.)
Whether the subconsciousness fills in the missing details within the nightmare or hallucination depends on the target! If this is done to another monster, it's up to their player.
Can a Goblin give someone pleasant dreams or visions instead?
Yes. But hallucinations that aren't inherently horrifying might take work to master, so be extra careful that that adorable bunny birthday party isn't suddenly overrun by Nosferatu.
I see that Goblins can enchant objects with elemental properties. Can you give more detail on how this works?
Of course! As mentioned, this ability requires some of the spellcaster's blood to activate the spell. They will have to keep supplying blood to keep the spell going over time (roughly once a week), and they can only do this to a few objects at a time, as these spells will drain them of their magic.
Keep supplying blood? Does that have to be the spellcaster's blood too, or will anyone's do?
The spellcaster's blood is only really needed to activate the spell. After that, they can use the blood of others, but their own will work much better. (Sort of like normally watering a plant vs adding some miracle-grow to the water.)
Kobolds are known to cause illness through spells when they're mad. Can Goblins do this too?
In order to keep the distinction between elemental magics and the more insidious dark magics clear, we would not allow illness/disease/pestilence/etc-type spells to naturally evolve out of the Goblin archetype. With fine control, a Goblin could use their magic to invoke illness-like symptoms in their victim as is thematically appropriate (for example, causing fevers through fire magic, frostbite through ice, shortness of breath through wind/air), but these would be traits of more advanced magic-usage, and would last only in the Goblin's presence.
MONSTER BODIES AND CHANGES:
Do the optional "wing-like protrusions" have any limitation on appearance besides their size? Like, are they birdlike, leathery, or insectoid? None of those?
Any type of wing is fine for the wing-like protrusions (birdlike, leathery, or insectoid).
Can the body spikes be retractable?
Yes!
Can Goblins have a tail as long as it isn't prehensile or able to be used as a weapon?
No, this would have to be a Mana reward or a god boon.
On the note of mottling/skin color patterns, would stripes be an acceptable form of this?
Yes!
Is the "shadow form" supposed to look like anything in particular (wisps of smoke, a three-dimensional dark figure, their own two-dimensional shadow, etc.)?
The shadow form can vary from Goblin to Goblin, so any of those options would be fine!
Does the shadow form have to look the same every time, or can it change shapes?
It can change shapes. Live your amorphous dreams!
Can Goblins travel in shadow form during the day without being hurt by the sun, or would this make them twice as weak?
They'll be hurt of they touch sunlight, and end up twice as weak. They should stay in the shadows in that form, and they could move around that way.
