CRYPTID

BASIC INFO ??? MANDATORY CHANGES ● Glowing eyes. ● A fully prehensile tail. May have a hand-like appendage on the end. ● Fur on any part of the body. ● Bigger feet. ● Antlers or antennae. The size and shape is irrelevant, so long as there is some appendage on top of their head. ● Blinking. Cryptids have the ability to disappear/teleport a short distance away when someone looks away or blinks. ● Inability to show up in detail on camera or film. They may instead be seen as hazy blurs or shadows. ● A shy or reserved nature. ● A weakness to being perceived. Cryptids are 'camera' shy and hate feeling like the center of attention. They prefer to sneak up on people, even just to talk. The longer the focus is on them, the weaker they feel. ● A need to feed on human energy. The Cryptid accomplishes this by sneaking up behind their target and grabbing the back of their head, sucking the energy out through their palm (or whatever functions as one). [back to top] OPTIONAL CHANGES ● Any psychological changes are welcome! Feel free to pull from real world myths, canon creatures of this variety, or any other source! ● A fog form. This is an exaggerated version of their monster form that appears only during the fog and is a chance to make your monster more "horrifying" during the fog. ● Travel form: the ability to take the form of a chupacabra at any time. In this form the character will be able to travel faster, however, they will also be more vulnerable. ● Moth-like wings capable of flight. ● Claws instead of nails. ● A desire to watch/stalk others. ● A desire to wear a suit. (CW: AMNESIA, click to open) ● Apart from their hunger for energy, some Cryptids suffer a hunger to be forgotten. These Cryptids feed on the memories of those that see them. If it's for a quick snack, they can eat only a few memories, but hungry Cryptids can take a person's whole life, leaving them with total amnesia. The Cryptid may have the ability to see a memory of their choice after they've fed. Have a very specific question in mind? Here's some questions that have been asked in the past!

FIRST OFF:

What sort of monster is this? What does 'limited edition' mean?
This is one of three special monster types introduced during an event in November 2023. The Fog cannot turn her children into any of these monsters on her own accord, so there is no need to opt out of them during the application process. Characters cannot have these monster types permanently. At the moment, the only way to get one of the limited edition monster types is to purchase a one month temp change through the Mana Rewards page.

Can I buy this monster form for two consecutive months? Or four?
No. One month is the limit, and you will need to wait at least one month before you can purchase this same monster type again. So for example, if you spend January as Alien, you can't purchase Alien again until March.

What about switching to a different limited edition monster?
That's allowed! If you'd like to spend one month as Alien, one month as Cryptid and one month as Elder God in a row, go for it!


FEEDING:

So Cryptids can have two feeding methods?
Correct. The energy feeding is the default that every single Cryptid will have, and the memory feeding is a secondary method of sating hunger that's entirely optional. Please remember to use content warnings when threading out/about this feeding method.

Can the lost memories be regained?
No. They're gone forever.

Do memories sate a Cryptid's hunger fully?
Yes, but the hungrier they are, the more memories they will need to devour. Effectively, this means that if a Cryptid feeds when close to a frenzy, they will need to devour so many memories that the victim is left with no recollection of their life whatsoever.


MONSTER ABILITIES:

Cryptids have "the ability to disappear from the spot and teleport a short distance away". What is "a short distance"?
This would be a range of roughly thirty feet in any direction (even up). Disappearing from the spot and reappearing on a street light overhead is very much possible! Reappearing three blocks away from their previous position, however, is not.


MONSTER BODIES & CHANGES:

Can we have both antenna and antlers, or is it just one or the other?
You can have both!

When it says suit, is this limited to formal/business three-piece suits or are there wider interpretations? (superhero suit, mascot suit, etc.)
This is limited to the typical formal suit. Cryptids like to feel distinguished and dapper!
